Monday 22nd February 2016 - Singapore

Fairly short entry today. After a bad night (we were both awake at 1:30 am so had a cup of tea and read for a bit), we found it difficult to get up when the alarm went off at 6:30. So, we ended up having breakfast later than we intended. As we had to check out of the hotel by 12, we didn't really have time to do anything major.  I had wanted to go back to Little India but it wasn't to be. Went for a walk instead and then back to the hotel to pack.

Checked out and took a taxi to Raffles,  where we had the long awaited gin slings.  Raffles has changed in the 31 years since we were last here. In 1985 the hotel was still genuinely old colonial and the long bar on the ground g floor was just a bar that happened to have invented and served the Singapore Gin Sling in order to allow ladies to drink alcohol in public. Now Raffles is self-consciously old colonial almost like a theme park and the drinks come along like a production line. Still delicious and the whole place is very atmospheric -see the video clip of the beautiful palm tree leaf fan. I asked the waiter and was told they serve about 800 g.s. a day – (that’s S$25,000 (£12,500) a day just from gin slings!). Had a brilliant time, although no stage for D to dance on with the Thai dancers.....will be back in another 31 years..

Then did a very long, hot and sweaty walk back to Marine Bay and on to Clark Quay and finally back to near our hotel. Had a very late lunch or early supper  (4pm) at the Persian restaurant we went to yesterday.  I had a Persian yogurt drink which is like a salted lassi but nicer.

Then back to the hotel to collect our cases for transfer to the airport for our 22:30 flight to Melbourne.  Claimed our 7% tax back on the merchandise we bought at Raffles -all done electronically and the amount will go back on the credit card. Now having the traditional glass of prosecco and writing this while waiting to board the Emirates flight to Melbourne.

We will then be 11 hrs ahead of you and as we land at 9 am Melbourne time the hotel rooms won't be ready. So we go straight off on a Melbourne City tour! We expect to be on our hotel by lunch time ish our time or midnight yours. More tomorrow.

Just seen the West Ham highlights on ESPN on the TV in the bar!!
