The original Noto having been razed to the ground in the earthquake of 1693, the town you see today is an orderly grid of beautiful buildings in honey toned stone. Considered by those in the know to be a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque, given the epithet 'Stone Garden', and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, thirty churches complement the cathedral, palaces include the Ducezio, now the town hall, and the best of myriad balconies adorn the Pallazo Nicolaci.
