The old town, Ragusa Ibia, climbs a small but steep hill, with valleys on three sides. The newer, Ragusa Superiore, was built on higher ground, to replace the old town after the 1693 earthquake. But its more reasoned, less romantic layout had little appeal for local aristocrats, who simply rebuilt new palazzi on the ruins of the old. Naturally, it is Ibia's labyrinthine lanes that draw the visitor now, Superiore still serving the practicalities of shops, bars and restaurants.
